Catalogs and Databases:
ACORN: This link takes you to ACORN, the Vanderbilt University online library catalog. You can use ACORN to find books, scores, CDs, and DVDs owned by the Music Library.
Tips for Searching ACORN:
- Set your search boxes to "words anywhere."
- Make sure that you put the word "and" between each of your search terms (or put one word in each box in the Advanced Search)
- Because music exists in many different formats (ex., score, recording, book), use the drop-down menu for "type" to narrow your results. These are the most common format types for music: BOOK, CD, DVD, and SCORE.
Naxos Music Library: This streaming music service allows you to listen to classical music from library computers. The Naxos Music Library contains the complete recording catalogs of both the Naxos and Marco Polo labels. Additional record labels licensed by the Naxos Music Library include Vanguard Classics, Saphir Productions, the British Music Society, Onyx, Vox, Musical Concepts, Chandos Records, Caprice, Wergo, Klavier, and Brana Records. The main genres covered are classical, world, folk, jazz, and Chinese music, with more than 170,000 tracks available for listening. This database is not available from off-campus for Pre-College students.
Oxford Music Online: Oxford Music Online allows you to search the contents of three music reference sources simultaneously: Grove Music Online, The Oxford Dictionary of Music, and The Oxford Companion to Music. This is a great place to get background information about composers, style periods, and genres of music. This database is not available from off-campus for Pre-College students.
